How Bulk Mail Rates Are Determined

Bulk Mail Rates are based on several factors, such as the size and destination of your mailing, how you prepare it, and where you drop it off. You can get lower rates if you presort your bulk mail and/or print barcodes on it. The amount you save depends on your specific situation and the way you prepare your mailing, including whether or not you stick a special precanceled stamp on each piece. USPS also charges an annual fee to get a permit for Marketing Mail and Nonprofit Standard Mail (which is different than Commercial Standard Mail). If you presort your mail and print barcodes and submit paperwork electronically instead of by paper, you can get bulk rate without paying annual fee.

A letter is any piece up to 6.125 x 11.5 landscape and can be in an envelope or not. A postcard is considered a letter, but can be either portrait or landscape. If your pieces are flat and cannot bend, they're called a "flat" and should be sent via the EDDM or Parcel Select Lightweight service. If you want to send a parcel, USPS has a special nonprofit DM service that lets you use their regular rates with a discount.
Summit Print can provide all the processing and sorting required to qualify your mailing for USPS low EDDM/Presort Automation rates, and we can even print the Intelligent Mail barcode that's now mandatory. Mail that uses the Intelligent Mail barcode is processed much faster by USPS, which can result in even quicker delivery of your mailing.
